Ken McLean is a Chartered Engineer with more than 35 years of mechanical building services engineering experience. He is regularly appointed as an engineering consultant and as an independent building services (MEP) expert witness.
Ken has given oral evidence and been cross-examined multiple times in international arbitration proceedings in the UK, Australia, Singapore and Canada, and given concurrent evidence (hot tubbing) with opposing experts. He has also presented expert evidence in adjudication proceedings.
As a named expert in over twenty major disputes, Ken has provided individual and joint expert reports for a range of building types from industrial and healthcare to hospitality, research and transportation. He has provided expert opinion on liability, design responsibility, client scope, performance issues, risk, professional responsibility, design duties, contractor duties, systems failures, and contributed to the assessment of design level of effort and delay factors.
Ken’s building services engineering experience ranges from on site to senior management; covering all aspects of technical design, management, planning, installation monitoring, supervision, testing and commissioning, trouble shooting, reporting and advising. His expert appointments have concerned major infrastructure, oil and gas, healthcare and mixed use development disputes in Australia, Canada and the UK along with the Middle East and CIS countries.
Ken is widely skilled in project management and multi-disciplinary team leadership along with detailed investigations, problem solving and project programming. He specialises in: HVAC systems; BMS and controls; fire protection; plumbing and drainage; building physics; energy efficiency and sustainability; energy and environmental modelling; regulations, codes and standards; and the interaction of users with the built environment.
Ken is a fellow of the Chartered Institution of Building Services Engineers, a member of the Institution of Mechanical Engineers and the American Society of Heating, Refrigerating & Air Conditioning Engineers and an associate member of the Chartered Institute of Arbitrators. He is fluent in French and has presented at a wide range of conferences and events in the UK, France and Turkey, regarding data centres, commissioning and opportunities for building services engineers.
